Tesla Wall Connector vs Universal EV Charger: Which to Choose?

Compare the Tesla Wall Connector with universal J1772 chargers. Charging speed, compatibility, cost, and features compared for Bay Area EV owners.

Tesla owners face a choice: the Tesla Wall Connector designed specifically for Tesla vehicles, or a universal J1772 charger that works with any EV. Here is how they compare.

Charging Speed

The Tesla Wall Connector delivers up to 48 amps and can add up to 44 miles of range per hour for Tesla vehicles. A typical universal J1772 charger like the ChargePoint Home Flex delivers up to 50 amps but is limited by the Tesla J1772 adapter to about 32-40 amps when used with a Tesla, reducing maximum charging speed slightly.

Compatibility

The Tesla Wall Connector works natively with all Tesla models via the NACS connector. Non-Tesla EVs can use it with a NACS-to-J1772 adapter. Universal J1772 chargers work with all non-Tesla EVs and work with Tesla using the included J1772 adapter.

Multiple Vehicles

If your household has two Teslas, the Tesla Wall Connector supports power sharing between up to six connectors on one circuit. If you have a Tesla and a non-Tesla EV, a universal J1772 charger is more practical since both vehicles can use it directly.

Cost

The Tesla Wall Connector costs about $475. Popular universal chargers like the ChargePoint Home Flex cost $600-700. Installation cost is the same for either option.

Recommendation

If your household is all-Tesla and you want maximum charging speed, go with the Tesla Wall Connector. If you have mixed EV brands or plan to sell the home someday, a universal J1772 charger provides better versatility.
