Buying an EV? What to Know About Home Charging Installation
First-time EV buyer guide to home charging. Understand Level 2 chargers, electrical requirements, costs, and what to tell your electrician.
Congratulations on your decision to go electric. Home charging is one of the biggest advantages of EV ownership -- wake up every morning with a full charge, no gas station stops. Here is what you need to know about setting up home charging.
Why Level 2 Is Worth It
Your EV comes with a Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet. While free to use, it adds only 3-5 miles of range per hour -- fine for a plug-in hybrid but painfully slow for a full EV. A Level 2 charger operates on 240 volts and adds 25-30 miles per hour, fully charging most EVs overnight. The convenience is worth the investment.
Before You Buy a Charger
Check your electrical panel. You need at least a 200-amp panel with available capacity for a 40-60 amp circuit. If your panel is 100 amps, you will likely need an upgrade. Determine where in your garage you want the charger -- the closer to the panel, the lower the installation cost.
Choosing a Charger
Tesla owners can choose the Tesla Wall Connector for the fastest charging speed, or a universal J1772 charger that works with any EV including Tesla with an adapter. Non-Tesla EV owners should choose a J1772 charger like the ChargePoint Home Flex, JuiceBox, or Grizzl-E.
Installation Process
A licensed electrician evaluates your panel, installs a dedicated circuit from the panel to the charger location, mounts the charger, and connects everything. The whole process takes 3-6 hours for a straightforward installation. Permits and inspection are typically included.
What It Costs
Budget $1,500 to $2,500 for installation plus $400-800 for the charger unit. If a panel upgrade is needed, add $2,500-4,500. Check for PG&E rebates and federal tax credits that can offset a portion of the cost.
