6 Signs Your Water Heater Is About to Fail
Recognize these warning signs of water heater failure before you wake up to a cold shower or a flooded utility room.
Water heaters rarely fail without warning. Here are six signs that your unit is approaching the end of its useful life.
1. Age
If your tank water heater is over 10 years old, start planning for replacement. The serial number on the manufacturer label includes the date -- the first two digits often represent the year. A 12-year-old water heater can fail at any time.
2. Rusty Water
Brown or rusty hot water from the tap indicates corrosion inside the tank. Once the tank lining starts corroding, failure is inevitable. This is different from rusty cold water, which points to pipe issues rather than the water heater.
3. Strange Noises
Rumbling, popping, or banging during heating cycles indicates heavy sediment buildup on the tank bottom. Flushing may help if caught early, but severe buildup often means the tank has been neglected too long and internal damage has begun.
4. Leaking
Any leak from the tank body means the inner lining has failed and the tank is corroding through. This is not repairable -- the water heater needs immediate replacement. Small drips quickly become major leaks.
5. Inconsistent Hot Water
If your water heater used to provide plenty of hot water but now runs out quickly, the lower heating element on electric models or sediment buildup on gas models may be the cause. If repair does not resolve it, the unit may be worn out.
6. Increasing Energy Bills
An aging water heater works harder and uses more energy to maintain temperature. If your gas or electric bill has crept up without other explanation, your water heater may be losing efficiency.
