DIY Home Energy Audit: Find Where Your Home Wastes Energy
Conduct a basic energy audit of your own home to identify air leaks, insulation gaps, and HVAC inefficiencies that increase your utility bills.
Before investing in major HVAC upgrades, a simple DIY energy audit can reveal low-cost fixes that make an immediate difference in comfort and energy bills.
Air Leak Detection
On a windy day, hold a lit incense stick near windows, doors, electrical outlets on exterior walls, recessed lights, and plumbing penetrations. Smoke movement indicates air leakage. Common leak points include window and door frames, where pipes and wires enter the home, recessed light fixtures, attic hatches, and fireplace dampers.
Insulation Check
Look in your attic. If you can see the ceiling joists above the insulation, you need more. Measure the depth -- if it is less than 10 inches of fiberglass or 8 inches of cellulose, adding insulation will improve comfort and reduce energy use. Check that insulation covers the entire attic floor evenly, with no bare spots around fixtures or access hatches.
Duct Inspection
If you have access to exposed ductwork in the attic or crawl space, look for disconnected joints, crushed or kinked flex duct, missing insulation on ducts in unconditioned spaces, and visible gaps at connections. Sealing these with mastic can reduce energy waste by 15-25%.
Window Assessment
Single-pane windows common in older East Bay homes are poor insulators. While replacement windows are expensive, interior storm windows or window film can improve insulation for a fraction of the cost. Focus on windows that face the afternoon sun first.
HVAC Filter Check
A dirty filter restricts airflow and forces your HVAC system to work harder. Check it now. If you can not see light through it, replace it. Set a calendar reminder to check monthly.
Next Steps
Armed with your audit findings, you can prioritize improvements that deliver the most savings per dollar invested. Air sealing and insulation typically offer the best return, followed by HVAC maintenance and equipment upgrades. PCG Climate can help with professional duct sealing, HVAC tune-ups, and equipment upgrades.
