Complete Guide to Home EV Charger Installation

Everything you need to know about installing a Level 2 EV charger at your East Bay home, from electrical requirements to costs and permits.

If you have purchased or are considering an electric vehicle, a Level 2 home charger is the most convenient way to keep it charged. Here is everything you need to know about the installation process for East Bay homes.

Level 1 vs Level 2 Charging

Level 1 uses a standard 120-volt outlet and adds about 3-5 miles of range per hour -- fine for plug-in hybrids but impractically slow for full EVs. Level 2 operates on 240 volts and delivers 25-30 miles of range per hour, fully charging most EVs overnight.

Electrical Requirements

A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit, typically 40 to 60 amps. This means you need available capacity in your electrical panel, 6-gauge or larger wire from the panel to the charger location, and a properly rated breaker. If your panel does not have capacity, an upgrade may be needed first.

Choosing a Charger

Popular options include the Tesla Wall Connector for Tesla owners, ChargePoint Home Flex for universal compatibility, JuiceBox for smart features and utility integration, and Grizzl-E for a budget-friendly hardwired option. All deliver excellent performance; the choice depends on your EV brand, desired features, and budget.

Permits and Inspections

California requires an electrical permit for EV charger installation. We pull the permit, perform the installation to code, and schedule the inspection. Most inspections pass on the first visit when installation is done properly.

Installation Cost

A typical home EV charger installation costs $1,200 to $2,500 including the dedicated circuit, charger mounting, and all connections. This does not include the charger unit itself, which ranges from $400 to $800 depending on the brand. If a panel upgrade is needed, add $2,500 to $4,500 for that work.

Rebates and Incentives

Check with PG&E for current EV charger rebates. California also offers various incentive programs that can offset installation costs. The federal tax credit may also apply to charger installation costs.
